Oscar winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attended the Newsweek Women in the World Summit in New York at The David H. Koch Theater – Lincoln where she took part in a discussion panel alongside activists Humaira Bachal and Khalida Brohi. Newsweek & The Daily Beast’s 2013 Women in the World Summit welcomed a diversity of inspirational women on April 4 and 5 in New York City to discuss women’s issues and the ways in which community building could further gender equality.
The summit was further set to explore issues behind the news through narratives of courageous, indomitable pioneers from disparate cultures who are fighting for the rights of women and girls. Khalida and Humaira were included in Newsweek’s list of 25 Under-25 Young Women to Watch and Sharmeen was honored in their list of 125 Women of Impact of 2013.
The Summit featured renowned International personalities from diverse fields such as the former US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, TV Host Oprah Winfrey, CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour, Indian journalist Barkha Dutt, actor Tom Hanks along with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The Summit was hosted by Tina Brown, Dr. Hawa Abdi, Nizan Guanaes, Julie Hamp amongst other co-hosts of the event,
Sharmeen was part of a special segment named ‘The next generation of Malalas’ moderated by Christiane Amanpour where the Oscar winning documentary filmmaker introduced the house to two young women, Humaira Bachal and Khalida Brohi in Pakistan who were fighting in obscurity and risking their lives for the rights of women and girls—including the right to go to school. The conversation focused on their contributions to social justice initiatives in Pakistan and the role played by these women in the country’s future.
