It’s true – most females, old and young, long for perfect skin. Whatever your idea of “perfect” skin is, taking care of it is so important, but surprisingly many people still do not know the most effective ways to take care of it. Studies show that your skin absorbs about 70% of what you put on it.
Knowing that, you don’t really want your skin to absorb chemical-laden cleansers or exfoliators do you? However, although products do indeed play a part in maintaining enviable skin, your diet and lifestyle is even more important and it does show on your face.
Apart from exercise and drinking at least two litres of water a day, your diet plays a huge role in how you look and feel. Here are a few “holy grail” edible items that do wonders for your skin.
Almond Milk
Unfortunately, too much dairy is highly inflammable which means an overuse can aggravate acne. You don’t have to quit, but why not go for almond milk, a healthier and more skin-friendly substitute. As almonds are packed with skin-loving Vitamin E and essential fatty acids (the good kind, ladies!) it is no surprise that almond milk will be a great option. Plus, believe me, it is so easy to make at home. All you need is almonds, water and a good blender.
Pumpkin seeds
Pumpkin seeds are great. They are small, but add that satisfying crunch to a simple salad or your cereal. High in vitamin E, zinc and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, these will help to supercharge your complexion, making your skin glow from inside and out.
Tip: For a healthy and delicious breakfast, try sprinkling some pumpkin seeds over yogurt and fresh fruit of your choice – it is insanely tasty and much better than boring Weetabix.
Hydrating fruit
Hydrating fruit, such as cucumber, watermelon and pineapple will do wonders for your skin. The high water amount in cucumbers – around 96% – is great for your skin and they help your body eliminate toxins. Not only that, but these watery fruit contain Vitamin C, a great nutrient for a glowing complexion, and collegan, an essential protein which keeps your skin firm. Another superfood fruit is avocado. This creamy green fruit is your skin’s best friend, as it is filled with healthy fats which are hydrating and can enchance your complexion and fight ageing.
Tip: Why not make a fresh juice from pineapple, cucumber, ginger and lemon – It gives an energy kick and a gorgeous glow!
Lean Greens
Not many people are fond of munching on green vegetables but not only are they great for your overall health, they are friendly towards your skin as well. Spinach and kale are wonderful, containing vitamins A, B, C and K as well as potassium, calcium (seriously) and iron. So try and incorporate these green leaves of nutrition and your skin will thank you and will return the favour by making your skin great enough to rival Miranda Kerr.
Oily fish
Oily fish, such as salmon and mackerel are sources of omega-3 fatty acids which are great if you are looking for glowing, hydrated and youthful skin. Including oily fish in your diet weekly is important not only for children but for adults as well as they are very beneficial for overall health, inside and out.
Green tea and dark chocolate
Many people know that green tea is brimmed with anti-oxidants, which are wonderful for a beautiful face. However, chocolate is similarly amazing. I’m not talking about supermarket milk chocolate, but pure dark chocolate which is loaded with anti-oxidants which promote clear, acne-free skin. However, you do have to make sure it is chocolate which contains 70% or more cocoa. Just remember the darker the chocolate, the more nutrient-dense it is.
