Shilpa Shetty Kundra is an Indian actress, film producer, dancer, author, businesswoman, and former model who predominantly appeared in Hindi-language films. Shetty made her screen debut in the thriller Baazigar which garnered her two Filmfare Awards nominations.
Shilpa Shetty Kundra has recently moved the court seeking dismissal of the plea that challenged Metropolitan Magistrate Ketaki Chavan’s order of discharging her from the 2007 obscenity case involving Hollywood actor, Richard Gere.
In January this year, the magistrate discharged the actress from the 2007 criminal case filed against her in Alwar, Rajasthan. She gave her a clean chit and said, “I am satisfied that the charge against the present accused, i.e. Shilpa Shetty, is groundless.”
However, not everyone was satisfied with the verdict. Soon, the Alwar police approached the sessions court in April with the plea that the magistrate had mistaken the judgment, and in fact, Shilpa’s role in “allowing to be kissed in public” was obscene.
Now, as per a Times Of India report, in reply to the Alwar police’s plea, the 47-year-old actress has filed an appeal through her advocate Prashant Patil to discharge her from the obscenity case.
Reportedly, her lawyer has stated in the application that the only allegation against her is that she did not protest when she was kissed by Gere. But, this doesn’t make her a conspirator or perpetrator of any crime, and the complainant’s reason to approach the court was “cheap publicity.”
As per the website, the application further stated, “The respondent (Shilpa Shetty) is a victim of malicious proceedings and harassment at the hands of the original complainant. The respondent is an established artist and has always acted responsibly in her public life and private life.”
For the unversed, Gere and Shilpa had attended an AIDS awareness program in Delhi 15 years ago, which was attended by thousands of truck drivers. There, the Hollywood actor kissed Shilpa on her cheeks. This PDA offended many sections of the society in India and cases were filed against them for obscenity and criminal conspiracy.
