First Pakistani Transgender to Feature in Short Movie ‘Rani’

Kami Sid, a social activist known for working for Pakistan’s transgender community shot to fame after she made her debut into the fashion world. As of late, she is hitting headlines as she is all set to appear in a short movie ‘Rani’.

The short film will serve as a loud and clear message for the rights of transgender community in Pakistan. Sid debuted in fashion industry as a model in November last year with with photographer Haseeb M. Siddiqui in order to raise voice for mainstreaming transgender community living in Pakistan.

Directed by US-based director Hammad Rizvi and produced by Karachi-based production house GrayScale, the movie is in post-production phase after it was shot in October, says Kami.

The transgender rights activist lauded the story of the short movie, saying the movie clearly manifests what transgenders are capable of. Pakistan is a country that is witness to transgender violence, as many incidents were reported in the current year against the community.

In May, a 23-year-old Alisha was gunned down and was denied treatment at the hospital which later led to her death. Thes incident sparked outrage in various areas of the country. Adding to the list of incidents are many videos about violence on the transgender community that stormed social media.

In the past year, over 45 transgenders were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone.

Kami Sid believes in an end to the violence and phobia of Transgender Community, diminishing the limits set for them in the country.
